Young Stamps is by far the best lyricist I've met in my life. His delivery, his swag, his persona, - he's totally on point with his shit. He is flawless. I want you to imagine a blend of Taekwondo, Kempo, mid 90's LL Cool J swag, the jazzy smoothness of Q-Tip, the animated cartoon-like character that is Busta Rhmes, the dirty, rugged, street voice that is Method Man, the hyphy funky nature of the bay area, the mainstream appeal of Fabolous, and you have my best friend, - Young Stamps. He is so technical with his style, no wonder he sites Bret Hart as his favorite professional wrestler. He embodies the "excellence of execution" in deed.

This is a compilation of material my friend has put together in recent months. A foreshadowing of things to come.

This Year In Hip-Hop

From my eyes.. Look, I don't claim to be the all-knowing undefeated hip-hop head, but one thing's for damn sure, I know good music when I hear that shit. And this year, a lotta good music came out.

And on that note, all u emcees wit' no style and u bitter hip-hop nerds who think the South is the enemy, quit sayin' Hip-Hop Is Dead. Nas said it and he had his reasons, it was big when he said it.

Step ur bars up, kids. I'm seein' way too many emcees who are stuck on "Keep keepin' it hip-hop". I swear to God, if Nas never said that, what the fuck would y'all be rappin' about? I mean, most definitely, it's important to be in tune with this culture, it's important to know ur history, it's good to know the basics, but - if u learned anything from the history of hip-hop and it's pioneers, the biggest thing is to be ORIGINAL.

Aiight, just had to wrap that up. Umm, so now I'd like to share my 3 favorite albums of this year.

And upon sharing them, I'd like to also define the perfect album. The perfect album should have a concept that flows coherently through each song. It should play out like a good fucking movie. Like The Godfather or The Departed. U feel me? Flawless!

1st album: Brother Ali "The Undisputed Truth"

Man, it could just be that I met this man in person and he was cool as fuck that makes this album more special to me, but naaaah.. That's not what it is. This album is flawless. Plain and simple. His imagery, his wordplay, his storytelling skills, his conviction, - that shit is real. And ANT is real nice on the beats.

My personal favorite song "Freedom Ain't Free"

2nd album: El-P "I'll Sleep When You're Dead"

Man, I had no clue what the fuck I was gettin' myself into when I bought this album. This shit is incredible. El Producto does an awesome job of painting a world of paranoia and turmoil. "I'll Sleep When You're Dead", I couldn't have thought of a better title for this monster.

Peep this video where El-P gets the shit beat out of him.

3rd album: Kanye West "Graduation"

Fuck y'all haters. This album is dope. This man loves his music so much and you can hear how much time he spends composing his shit listening to this album. Wish motherfuckas like Lil' Wayne took their music as serious instead of always nonchalantly sleepwalking through 16 bars like that's the cool thing to do. And yeah, I heard the R.A. / Rude Jude debate, and I thought it was fucking retarded. All hip-hop heads take note, you don't have to rhyme a million fucking multiple syllables in every bar in order to be officially considered hip-hop. Just keep it real like my man Kanye and you can get away with the simplest shit AND sound dope doing it.

If ya'll haven't checked out El Michels Affair yet, now is a good time to do that. Hailing out of Brooklyn (i think), drummer Leon Michels put together a band to record those funky grooves we would empty our pockets for. Their first release, "Sounding Out The City" sound so old school that if you were to find this record at the record store you would probably try to pull a price tag switch to get over the properitors. Aside the XM concert a couple years ago, El Michels Affair has done some covers of some Wu tracks that they released on to 7" and cut a remix of Raekwon's track, "The PJ's" that was previously released on the Nature Sounds compilation last year. There's a couple joints on that single that will blow your mind! (The cover art is dope too.. it has gold foil on it.. haha)

So for all y'all that have been feelin Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, or anything released on Daptone Records, be sure you check out El Michels Affair and Truth and Soul Records, theres some crazy ass shit being released these days.

While listening to the new Ghostface LP, I noticed he used a track sampling ("Shakey Dog") El Michels Affair. That's pretty dope of him, cuz a while back Wu-Tang minus some members did a live XM satellite concert with El Michels Affair a couple years back (check back for up). Anyway, I went on their label's site to see if there were any updates on the band, but i stumbled across something pretty dope. Universal Records asked Truth and Soul to do a remix of Amy Winehouse's "Love is a Losing Game". By far my favorite track on that album, and that's pretty dope of them to get T&S to do a remix.

Royce da 5'9, the only emcee they say can toe to toe lyrically on a track with the beast known as Eminem, has been shitted on in a freestyle battle with our very own bay area "freestyle" king - oakland bred - MISTAH FAB. Mistah Fab, a leader and an open advocate of this madness that we know as the simple minded ass "go dumb" movement.

A lot of his shit is real sing-song hook chorus, but he's a dope lyricist, his beats are hot, and with his new album, he's touchin' on a lot of social issues. If you watch MTV2 or 106th&Park or whatever, they play his new music video with Slick Rick as "Hip Hop Police & Evening News". They play Hip Hop Police but they never play Evening News. So since his album came out yesterday, peep my man's video they won't play on TV. I think it's real clever.

And damn, this man picked a tough week to come out too. Right after 50 and Kanye's big week?? Dayuuuum.

Yo, it's good publicity and it gives me a reason to go and buy Kanye's shit, just because I'm not tryna see 50 outsell him.

Will the College Dropout beat the Wanksta this Tuesday? I have reason to believe so. First off, I feel like Kanye's core fan base is very diverse one and a loyal one. 50's fans are real fickle. They hate him one second, and they're suckin' his cock the next second. Plus in the past few years, there's been massive anti-50 campaigning, endorsed by the likes of Nas, Jadakiss, Fat Joe, Yukmouth, and of course, the fuckin' Game. The Game put out like a million mixtapes shittin' on 50 and G-Unit, not to mention a DVD "Stop Snitchin', Stop Lyin" that every teeny boppin' tootsie roll poppin' thug infected kid gotta hold of, VIA Best Buy or the internet. Not to mention 50's been havin' a hard time pushin' out his subpar rappers like Lloyd Banks, Young Buck, and Tony Gayo. His street credibility's been under close analysis for the longest. I'm not sayin' that his song "I Get Money" hasn't boosted his appeal, but I just feel that his fans aren't gonna go to bat for him this Tuesday.

And then there's the Louis Vatton Don Kanye West.. Like 50, he's hadda history of pullin' a couple of loud mouth stunts. It may have displeased a couple of heads, but his core fan base still bumps College Dropout, still bumps Late Registration regardless. The few times people have tried to call him out, he handled those situations with ease. For instance, when Beanie Sigel called him gay lol - Kanye just shrugged it off with no real negative words for Beanie Mack. And to me, that says Kanye's not as bigheaded as we say he is. Plus Kanye's been behind some dope projects that were received very well - John Legend, Common, and of course, Jay-Z. Just off that, Kanye's got mad credibility. And u know his new shit, "Stronger" is gettin' bumped hard out in Europe and Asia, just because the sound is so different.

That's just my input on why I think Kanye's gonna outsell 50 this Tuesday. Could be wrong though. What do y'all think???

Stones Throw label manager Eothan "Egon" Alapatt. This man is a legend. If he ever owned a record store, I would probably have to wear a bib from excessive drooling. Although having no clue of what would bless his dollar bins, I would not doubt each purchase possessing a sound that is absolutely incredible. He is the ultimate preservationist outside of the antique industry. I'm almost positive you will be able to catch him on episodes of the Antique Roadshow when vinyl culture hits its 'age of extinction' (pray that this never happens).

What up, y'all? My names Gigio, 19 goin' on 20, artist in the form of an emcee, representin' the 707, Fairfield, CA to be exact. I'll be postin' blogs from time to time on this joint. So I figure I'd share my Rock The Bells experience with y'all.

So we're on I80 by 9, and we reach San Francisco around 10. After fuckin' up and makin' a few wrong turns, bein' that I'm a Fairfield cat - these SF streetlights be confusin' the fuck outta my ass, - we finally found 3rd street. We parked like 10 blocks away from McCovey, paid 10 dollars for parking. Haha! They had parkin' right by the venue, but that shit was $30. And I'd rather walk hella far for free. So I saved my ass some weed money. Thank God.

Met up with some heads from the Field. Actually, throughout the whole day, seen hella heads from Fairfield, so that's a beautiful thing for the Field, y'all. Shows that a new movement is under way. Lots of activists handin' out flyers and shit, and everybody was glad to exchange words of "Fuck Bush" with them.

I signed some petition against the cruel treatment of chickens. Yo! We gotta stop eatin' chickens, y'all. It's terrible that we take these delicious creatures of God. I mean, we gotta start eating vegetables... and bark... and shit like that. Change the world and make a difference! Go boycott your local KFC today! Right now!!

So yo, we finally in now. We're @ the mainstage, and there was barely ne1 there. Supernatural & Rahzel, our hosts, were just clownin', havin' a dope freestyle session. Supernatural lost hella weight too. There was a point @ the beginning where u could walk from the mainstage to the Paid Dues stage to newhere in the parking lot, for that matter. But damn, that was short-lived. 80,000 people. That's damn near the entire population of Fairfield.

Jedi Mind Tricks set it off. Vinnie Paz rockin' with the Heineken in his hand and the mic in his other.
Immortal Technique hit the stage after that, dropped that hardcore gangsta revolutionary shit, and hit us with some truth. Cuzzin broke the set down for a second to make a very good point, which is all this bullshit that we see goin' on in the ghetto, directly effects every single one of us, regardless of race. So if you think ur cool and safe from all this fuckin' havoc that's bein' inflicted on poor people 'cause ur sittin' in the 'burbs, playin' XBox, ur wrong. - I mean, the Field is a perfect example of what my man was talkin' about. There's weight bein' pushed in Laurel Creek right now, crazy shit happenin'.

Then Pharoahe Monch hit the stage witha live band. Performed some hits off "Desire". Cop that shit if u don't got it, btw. This man does a phenomenal cover of Public Enemy's "Welcome to the Terrordome" on that shit. My man was on fire though. And his backup singers were so hype

EPMD came out. DJ Scratch tore it up. Educated us on their history with Run DMC. Erick Sermon performed "Just Like Music".

Kweli came out. Performed some new shit off Eardrum. He brought out the Strongarm Steady Gang, brought out Jean Grae.
Mos popped up, had the crowd goin' crazy. Performed "Definition".I was so happy when Mos hit us with "Umi Says" though. I love that fuckin' song. Play that shit @ my funeral, somebody.

Some crazy white bitch was doin' way too much.
She was tryna push her way up to see Mos, I can't blame her, but she was wasted though. "Guys, Mos Def is on stage, and I wanna give him my blunt!" Every1 told her to shut the fuck up. I told her Mos didn't wanna smoke her weak ass weed. Shit was hilarious. We wouldn't let her pass us.

The Roots came out after that. Black Thought was on point.

I don't know if ne1 else caught it, but one of Questlove's drumsticks broke while he was bangin' them shits. Shit happened so quick. He kept goin'. So sick.

And then Public Enemy stole my heart. Chuck D was so hype. Flava Flav was so fuckin' cool, man. It was just so much love when they was on stage. Chuck was playin' hot potato with the mic, jumpin' all over the stage like a rockstar, u'd swear homey was 20. So much energy. They performed all their hits, man. Made me wanna buy every single one of their CDs on the spot - and just waste my entire paycheck on Public Enemy, man. I get paid this Friday, so I'm splurgin'.

Yo, these guys are genius performers. I love it. Mentally takin' notes the entire time on how the masters do it. Flava Flav, man, that dude has so much love. I don't give a fuck what no1 says, that man got so much love and no ill intent in his heart at all. But he does look like a "skeleton wrapped in electrical tape". LOL @ Greg Giraldo. Nah, for real though, Flav's the shit. And Deelishis gotta big ass.

But the moment between Public Enemy & Cypress Hill is when shit began to reach its pinnacle of massive retardation in the crowd. I'm sorry to say, but u drunk white Rage fans were actin' real foolish. Peep, there were two drunk ass white kids near us up in the front, and some photographers were tellin' the crowd to throw up the W for Wu, and these foolish fucks were like "What's every1 doin?" And a second b4 that, these fools were talkin' about startin' a moshpit. Fuckin' foolishness, yo. lol Crazy shit.

Cypress Hill came out strong. And I was hype, 'cause I hadda blunt pre-rolled from the night b4 just so that I could blaze up soon as Cypress Hill came on. So we blazed up. But the whole time, these two foolish ass rockers started stormin' to the front, elbowin' ppl, fuckin' up our whole shit. I was hella pissed. The entire crowd upfront was on top of eachother because of them, so we were swaying left and right, back and forth. There was so many people, it felt like I was inside of an ocean. I've never been surrounded by that many people in my life. To the point where every angle I look toward, I see heads and faces, and nothing past that. My girl was gettin' crushed between hella people. We were tryna enjoy Cypress Hill, but that shit was just too unbearable. Too fuckin' crazy. I was on the verge of sockin' those drunk fucks in the face. It was all love b4 them too. Every1 in our area was hella cool, we were sellin' eachother cookies, water, jello, talkin' to eachother about who we're hype to see. Str8 love till those fools fucked shit up. My girl damn near hadda panic attack. So me and my girl got to the front and security pulled us out. I was hella pissed. - 'Cause Cypress Hill was so strong. So we went and caught some food, $10 burgers, $10 chicken fingers, $5 french fries.

WuTang Clan came out. We were hella far away though. Wish I coulda been a part of Method Man's stage diving antics, and I wish I coulda seen Redman up close. But it was humbling neways, just to see from a distance.

Rage Against The Machine came out, and I made sure to watch that from a distant distance, 'cause white people are crazy. lol - Shit was so crazy to witness. I've never seen nothing like that. Just to look at a sea of people, moshpits, fists pumping, smoke bombs flying, - the ambulance ended up comin' witha stretcher. Somebody musta got knocked the fuck out and I hope it was one of those fags that blew my Cypress Hill high. But yeah, Rage was hot though. Hype. I mean, words can't describe how passionate they were. And I think the majority of people that were even @ Rock The Bells were there specifically to see Rage. It's crazy how a successful rock band can be so big, that their fans are willing to sit through a buncha rap acts that they don't even like, just to see them fuck shit up. But yeah, Rage was hot though.

All in all, Rock The Bells was the shit. Few bumps here and there, but it was hot. I wish Nas came out. I wish there was some surprise guests. I woulda liked to see KRS One. In the future, they should bring Little Brother and Dilated Peoples, some more current underground acts. But yeah, I can't lie, man. My life changed. - I went to work today, I couldn't stand still, I was still in aftershock from the show. My coworker told me I looked like I just got back from the concert. lol But truth is, I never left.

But yeah, 2 words to describe the experience: FUCKING CRAZY.

Ode to Max Roach

Max Roach was the hottest drummer in New York by the time he was 20 years old. By the time he died at age 83, he was truly one of the giants of jazz.

Roach died early Thursday morning in hospice care in New York after a long illness.

In addition to being a drummer, Roach was also a composer, a bandleader, an activist and a teacher.

He redefined what it meant to be a drummer. Before he arrived, the drum functioned basically as a timepiece. Roach says he made his drums sing solos.

"I felt that the instrument itself could be just as vital as any of the others I could think of," Roach said. "And by virtue of the fact that you deal with that instrument with all four limbs, you have four voices you deal with when you think like that."

In 1989, Roach described the drum kit as an American invention that combines cymbals from the Middle East, tom-toms from Africa and snares from Europe. His band mate Cecil Bridgewater says Roach's genius was in putting those parts together.

"Max doesn't play fundamental drumbeats behind you just to keep the time going," Bridgewater says. "He's making musical statements at all times."

Max Roach was born in a North Carolina town founded by freed slaves, and grew up in a rough Brooklyn neighborhood. His mom gave him drums to keep him off the street. But it was on Manhattan's 52nd Street that Roach started experimenting with harmony and melody alongside Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk and Charlie Parker.

"We hated to sleep," Roach said. "We'd work 9 'til 9 in two different clubs. We'd spend the day looking for places, working out arrangements on things like [Thelonius Monk's] 'Around Midnight.'"

Before his death in 1993, Dizzy Gillespie commented that Roach was a remarkable innovator.

"He had terrific ideas," Gillespie said. "And he developed them as we went along. He had the lick for the shtick."

Roach founded a seminal quintet in 1953 with trumpeter Clifford Brown. But after just three years, Brown was killed in a late-night car accident. He was only 25. Shocked and grieving, Max Roach buried himself in music, and in the blossoming civil rights movement.

In 1960, he recorded an album called "We Insist—The Freedom Now Suite" that featured, among others, singer Abbey Lincoln. It was Roach's answer to the turmoil of the time.

Roach continued to speak out for social justice and helped launch the field of jazz studies. His magnet for talent led him into lifelong collaborations with dancers, playwrights, filmmakers and musicians of practically every genre and every country.

What seemed to happen whenever Max Roach was around was fearlessness—on the bandstand, in the classroom, and on the streets.

i'm looking forward to see ratm and epmd and the roots, but i hope to hear collabos throughout the day. instead of black star doin their set, why not do a couple tracks with the roots, or nas get on some doom beats... you know? somethin hella crazy! and shiet ratm is gonna fuckin kill it. for the few that never heard their shit... ya'll are in for somethin ridiculous.

stepping back a lil.. i had the opportunity to check out the summer haze tour in berkeley saturday night. ozomatli with co-headliners g love and the special sauce and slightly stoopid. crazy venue with crazy people. it smelled like grape swishers the whole night (how fitting for the tour right?). notable highlights of the show was during g love's set: they busted out playing red clay in the middle of blues music AND right before their set ended they started playing lou reed's walk on the wild side (you know the sample for can i kick it?). ozomatli came out stage after the song and then they had a freestyle session with the can i kick it chorus in between. dope shit.

This is the first post here on the Rhythm Aces blog. I'm not sure if it's going to be called PSV RADIO or Rhythm Aces. For those of you who don't know The rhythm aces are a group (Double D. & Santos) from Fairfield/Sacramento/Davis California of DJ/Music enthusiasts who host a radio show called PSV RADIO on KDVS 90.3
